fender-custom-shop-bass-vi-dlx-closet-classic
Fender Custom Shop Bass VI DLX Closet Classic

The Bass VI is the six-string bass tuned an octave below a guitar, and this one recreates the '60s version with DLX Closet Classic aging: moderate finish checking and lightly oxidized hardware, the look of a well-kept instrument decades on.

A two-piece select alder body, a quartersawn maple neck with a 3A rosewood fingerboard, and three Custom Shop '62 Single-Coil Jaguar pickups, each with its own on/off slide switch. A separate two-position slide engages the bass-cut "Strangle" circuit, which thins out the low end. The '60s Oval "C" carve and 1.555" nut keep the neck close to guitar proportions, the 7.25" radius feels round under the hand, and the 6-saddle bridge sits ahead of a floating tremolo tailpiece, as on the originals.

Two other Bass VI builds are on the list: the 1962 Bass VI Super Heavy Relic, with far heavier wear, and the 1966 Bass VI Journeyman Relic with Gold Closet Classic Hardware.

Finishes are Aged Firemist Silver, Aged Olympic White and Super Faded Aged Fiesta Red, with a 3-Ply Mint Green or 4-Ply Brown Shell pickguard depending on the finish.

The photos show one example. Wood grain and aging vary from bass to bass, so the one built for you will differ in the details.

SPECIFICATIONS

BODY
Country of Origin: USA
Body Material: 2-Piece Select Alder
Body Finish: Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Body Shape: Bass VI
Pickguard: 3-Ply Mint Green or 4-Ply Brown Shell (by finish)
Aging: DLX Closet Classic

NECK
Neck Material: Quartersawn Maple
Neck Finish: Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Neck Shape: '60s Oval "C"
Fingerboard Radius: 7.25" (184.1 mm)
Fingerboard Material: 3A Rosewood
Position Inlays: Vintage Clay Dot
Number of Frets: 21
Fret Size: Jescar Medium Vintage (47095)
Truss Rod: Vintage-Style Butt Adjust
Nut Material: Bone
Nut Width: 1.555" (39.5mm)
Scale Length: 34" (864 mm)

ELECTRONICS
Bridge Pickup: Custom Shop '62 Single-Coil Jaguar
Middle Pickup: Custom Shop '62 Single-Coil Jaguar
Neck Pickup: Custom Shop '62 Single-Coil Jaguar
Pickup Configuration: SSS
Controls: Master Volume, Master Tone
Switching: 3-On/Off Slide Switches (One for Each Pickup)
Special Electronics: 2-Position Slide Switch for Bass-Cut "Strangle" Circuit

HARDWARE
Bridge: 6-Saddle Vintage-Style Adjustable with “Floating” Tremolo Tailpiece
Hardware Finish: Nickel/Chrome
Tuning Machines: Vintage-Style with Fender Logo
Control Knobs: Black Plastic
Strings: Fender Bass VI 5350/6 Stainless Steel .025-.095

CASE
Case: Deluxe Hardshell
