fender-custom-shop-jaco-pastorius-tribute-fretless-jazz-bass
Fender Custom Shop Jaco Pastorius Tribute Fretless Jazz Bass

Jaco Pastorius played a fretless Jazz Bass with a sunburst finish worn deep into the wood, and this tribute recreates it, down to the wear pattern of his original. It was researched in cooperation with his technician.

The select alder body wears a distressed 3-Color Sunburst in nitrocellulose lacquer, with no pickguard. The slab rosewood board is coated in epoxy, which protects the wood from wear by roundwound strings, as on his original. Side dots mark the positions. Two Custom '60s single-coil Jazz Bass pickups run through two volumes and a master tone, and knurled chrome knobs replace the usual Jazz Bass knobs, as on his bass.

A player new to fretless should know there are no lines on the face of the board. For a fretted Jazz Bass of the same early '60s pattern, compare the 1961 Jazz Bass Heavy Relic.

The photos show one example. Wood grain and aging vary from bass to bass, so the one built for you will differ in the details.

SPECIFICATIONS

BODY
Country of Origin: USA
Body Material: Select Alder
Body Finish: Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Body Shape: Jazz Bass
Pickguard: None
Aging: Relic

NECK
Neck Material: Maple
Neck Finish: Gloss Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Neck Shape: "C" Shape
Fingerboard Radius: 12" (305 mm)
Fingerboard Material: Epoxy Coated, Slab Rosewood
Position Inlays: Side Dot
Number of Frets: Fretless
Fret Size: Vintage-Style
Nut Material: Synthetic Bone
Nut Width: 1.5" (38.1 mm)
Scale Length: 34" (864 mm)

ELECTRONICS
Bridge Pickup: Custom '60s Single-Coil Jazz Bass
Neck Pickup: Custom '60s Single-Coil Jazz Bass
Pickup Configuration: SS
Controls: Volume 1.
