friedman-vx-30-head
Friedman VX-30 Head

The VX-30 Head is Dave Friedman's take on the early-1960s British EL84 amp: 30 watts from four EL84s, three ECC83s in the preamp, a 5AR4 tube rectifier, cathode bias and no negative feedback. Friedman built the circuit from a 1963 copper-panel amp with a Top Boost circuit, and it's handcrafted in Los Angeles on custom-made transformers.

The Brilliant channel has its own Treble, Bass and Volume. The Normal channel has a Volume and a three-position Voice switch, Treble, Normal or Bass, after the voicings the originals were offered in. Unlike those amps, the two channels run in phase, so you can blend them the way you'd jump the inputs on a Plexi. A Cut control and a Master Volume let the EL84s work at a level a room can take, and there's no standby switch because the rectifier warms the amp up gently on its own.

Pair it with the matching VX-212, which carries two Celestion Alnico Blues, or with any cab you already own: there's one 16 ohm output plus paired outputs for a single 8 ohm cab or two 16 ohm cabs. If you'd rather carry one box, the VX-30 2x12 Combo puts the same amp and the same two speakers in a single cabinet. It comes in Black or Ivory.

SPECIFICATIONS

AMPLIFIER
Country of Origin: United States
Configuration: Head
Wattage: 30-watt all-tube
Bias: Cathode-biased power section with zero negative feedback
Rectifier: 5AR4 tube rectifier (no standby switch needed)
Transformers: Custom-made transformers
Construction: Handcrafted in Los Angeles, California
Cosmetics: Black or Ivory

TUBES
Power Tubes: 4 x EL84
Preamp Tubes: 3 x ECC83

CONTROLS
Brilliant Channel: Volume, Treble, Bass
Normal Channel: Volume and three-position Voice switch (TREBLE, NORMAL, BASS)
Channel Blend: Both channels operate in phase and can be blended
Cut: Power amp high-frequency shaping
M.V.C.: Master Volume Control

CONNECTIONS
Inputs: High and Low sensitivity
Speaker Outputs: 1 x 16 Ω, plus paired outputs for 1 x 8 Ω or 2 x 16 Ω cabinets

FEATURES
Matching Cabinet: VX-212 with dual Celestion Alnico Blue speakers (sold separately)
Warranty: Limited Lifetime Warranty

DIMENSIONS
Dimensions: 8.5″ (D) x 24″ (W) x 9.5″ (H)
Weight: 37 lbs
