Andy Powers started Powers Electric in June 2023, separate from Taylor Guitars, where he is master guitar designer and has been CEO since 2022. He built it because he wanted a sound and a feel that did not already exist.
There is one model. The A-Type is a fully enclosed hollowbody: an Urban Ash body under a braced solid maple top, with two soundposts trussing the box from the inside. It is light, and the trussing is what keeps a box that size from howling when you turn up. One-piece mahogany neck, Honduran rosewood board on an asymmetrical radius, 21 jumbo frets, 24 7/8 inch scale.
The pickups are Powers' own Faraday design, and which one you pick decides most of the guitar. FF42 is the full Faraday, warm and hi-fi. PF42 is partial, brighter and harder. The CamTail is his tailpiece and bridge in one, with the string ramps compensated individually for gauge and tension so everything bends in tune together. There is a hardtail if you never touch a bar.
The look comes off hot rods, surfboards and San Diego, and so do the colours. Fayence Yellow, Signal Yellow, Shark Blue, Silverburst, British Racing Green, Macchiato, Light Shadow Black over quilted maple, Ocean Blue with a white back. Firestripe pickguards turn up often, and the bridge comes in ebony or Delrin.
