Our take

Who this one is for

The MF O is Collings' F-style mandolin with an oval soundhole: a carved Adirondack spruce top over Eastern flamed maple back, sides and neck, finished all over in satin nitrocellulose lacquer. The trim is tortoise binding on the top, an ebony board with mother-of-pearl dots and nickel Gotoh tuners with black buttons. Collings builds it with the same construction and woods as its fully appointed F-models.

Collings says the oval hole and its X-bracing bring up the bass and low mids for a warmer, more open voice, where its f-hole mandolins have more cut and chop. The nut is 1 3/16", a touch wider than the 1 1/8" on the f-hole models, on a 7" to 11 5/8" compound radius. For this oval-hole body in full gloss with ivoroid binding and the Flourish peghead inlay, look at the MF5 O. For f-holes in satin, the MF.

Collings can take it further with options on tops, finishes, trim and inlays, listed below.

The photo shows one example build.

Options for this model include:

Italian spruce top, or torrefied Adirondack spruce on the MT2
Black or cream top finish
Gloss top
1 3/16" nut width
Ivoroid binding
Pickguard, bound or unbound
Waverly tuner upgrade
Left-handed build

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
