Our take

Who this one is for

The MT is Collings' A-style mandolin in satin: a carved Engelmann spruce top with f-holes and tone bars, Eastern flamed maple back, sides and neck, and satin nitrocellulose lacquer throughout. Collings graduates each set of woods individually and keeps the appointments simple, with tortoise binding on the top, an ebony board with mother-of-pearl dots and nickel Gotoh tuners with black buttons.

Collings credits the thin lacquer and graduated woods with long sustain, a wide dynamic range and quick response. For the same A-style body with an Adirondack top, full gloss and ivoroid binding on the back and fingerboard, look at the MT2. The MT O is this mandolin with an oval hole, which Collings voices warmer and more open, where the MT has more cut and chop.

Collings can add options such as ivoroid top binding, a gloss top and peghead, a floating pickguard and other colours, and the list follows below.

The photo shows one example build.

Options for this model include:

Italian spruce top, or torrefied Adirondack spruce on the MT2
Black or cream top finish
Gloss top
1 3/16" nut width
Ivoroid binding
Pickguard, bound or unbound
Waverly tuner upgrade
Left-handed build

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
