Our take

Who this one is for

The A-Type is Andy Powers' electric, on a body shape of its own. Under the solid maple top is a trussed hollow body in urban ash: light on the strap, resonant, and voiced to keep feedback down. The one-piece mahogany neck has 21 jumbo frets on an asymmetrical fingerboard radius that makes bends easy, with twin-arch inlays in Honduran rosewood and a 24-7/8" scale.

The pickups are proprietary single coils with neodymium magnets. The FF42 (Full Faraday) is the warmer, hi-fi set. The PF42 (Partial Faraday) is brighter and punchier. The CamTail, a machined aluminium camshaft vibrato, returns to pitch after a dive. If you never touch a whammy, the top-loading hardtail anchors straight into the internal structure.

This page covers the solid colours: one gloss colour, or a two-tone or colour-shift Chroma finish, which costs more. Most of the A-Types we've ordered went out with PF42s, a Firestripe guard and the CamTail. If you haven't played one, start there. For a figured maple top under a translucent colour, look at the A-Type Select.

Every A-Type is built to order. After you order, we confirm the rest of the build with you: tailpiece, pickups, saddles (Delrin, brass or ebony), plating, pickguard and knobs. Pricing may change depending on the options chosen. The photos show one example of each colour. The colour list runs well past what's here, so if yours is missing, ask us.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
