The Woodshed Comp is Andy Wood's signature compressor, a small feed-forward VCA compressor built around a studio-type schematic. In a feed-forward circuit the input signal controls the gain reduction, where Suhr's Koji uses the output. Suhr's aim was compression that keeps the guitar's transients and character, with sustain that doesn't depend on more amp gain.
It is set with a fast attack and balanced compression, and the controls have a wide, sensitive sweep with an expanded ratio, threshold and gain range, so the threshold still works on lower-output single coils. Headroom is the highest of any Suhr pedal, close to 24 volts before clipping, which means it also works as a clean boost with little or no compression, or as a strong boost into the front of a tube amp. The enclosure is 1.82" wide.
For parallel compression with a Mix knob and a Voice switch, compare the Koji Compressor Black Edition.
