Our take

Who this one is for

The Mod Shop Black Cat 30 combo is Mark Sampson's rework of the Black Cat, done after he returned to Bad Cat in 2024: a new tone stack and a new 30-watt power supply. It was the Mod Shop's first release, built in small numbers in Costa Mesa, with his signature plate on the front.

It's four EL84s, two channels with independent gain and volume, and shared Bass, Treble and Cut. Reverb and bias-modulated tremolo are both on board, and the footswitch covers channel and tremolo. It sits on the classic, expressive side of the Bad Cat line. Where the Hot Cat 50 goes for big contrast and high gain, the Black Cat stays rich and touch-driven.

It comes in a Baltic birch cabinet with a gold grille and black covering, and weighs 48 lbs. The buffered loop, line out and multiple speaker outputs mean it can drive an extension cab when the room calls for more. We'd pick it over the head if you want the whole sound in one box.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
