Our take

Who this one is for

A mid-'50s Stratocaster without the vibrato. The strings run through the body into a 6-saddle hardtail bridge with bent steel saddles, so there are no springs to stretch or settle and string changes stay quick. The rest is 1956: a 2-piece select alder body with an offset seam, a maple neck and fingerboard, and three Custom Shop Hand-Wound '56 Single-Coil Strat pickups with the middle one reverse-wound and reverse-polarity, so positions 2 and 4 cancel hum.

The Heavy Relic aging is the deep end of the scale: worn-through lacquer, checking and the look of decades of gigs. The 7.25" to 9.5" compound radius feels vintage round down low and flatter up the neck, and the Jescar Vintage frets keep the narrow, low feel of the period. Tone 1 works the neck pickup and Tone 2 the middle, as on the originals.

If you want the vibrato back, the 1957 Stratocaster Heavy Relic is the closest match. The Vintage Custom '55 Hardtail Strat and Vintage Custom '59 Hardtail Strat take the same fixed-bridge idea with a cleaner, as-new finish.

Finishes are Black, Faded Blue Ice Metallic and Super Aged Lake Placid Blue.

The photos show one example. Wood grain and aging vary from guitar to guitar, so the one built for you will differ in the details.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Want an estimate for this model before you order? Ask us in the chat.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
