Our take

Who this one is for

Yngwie Malmsteen built neo-classical shred on a modified Vintage White Stratocaster, and his signature model, first released in 1988, was one of the first signature Strats. This Custom Shop version keeps the parts he settled on: a scalloped fingerboard, Seymour Duncan YJM Fury pickups, a brass nut and the big headstock.

Scalloping removes wood between the frets so your fingertip touches only string and fret. It gives more control over vibrato and bends, but a heavy grip pulls notes sharp, so it rewards a light touch. The board is round-laminated scalloped maple on a 9.5" radius with 21 super jumbo frets and a 1.620" nut, a little narrower than usual. The YJM Fury set is voiced for each position, with a five-way blade, Schaller "F" tuners, a vintage-style synchronized tremolo and Dunlop strap locks fitted to the body.

For the big-headstock look on a conventional board, the 1969 Stratocaster Journeyman Relic is the vintage contrast. The Malmsteen comes in Candy Apple Red, Sonic Blue, Vintage White and Burgundy Mist Metallic.

The photos show one example. Wood grain and aging vary from guitar to guitar, so the one built for you will differ in the details.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Want an estimate for this model before you order? Ask us in the chat.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
