Our take

Who this one is for

Sean Hurley is a Los Angeles session and touring bassist who anchored John Mayer's Born and Raised and Paradise Valley on a well-worn '61 Precision Bass. This is the Custom Shop copy of that bass, with a Closet Classic nitro finish over select alder.

The detail that sets it apart is the string mute. Hurley used to stuff foam under the strings in front of the bridge, so this bass has a built-in mute you can engage mid-song to deaden the strings. Past that it is classic early sixties: a quartersawn maple neck with a custom "C" carve, a 7.25" radius rosewood board with 20 vintage-style frets, a 1.75" bone nut, a hand-wound vintage split single-coil with master volume and tone, and a thumb rest. The 7.25" radius feels round under the hand.

For the same era without the mute, the 1960 Precision Bass Relic and the 1960 Precision Bass DLX Closet Classic are close relatives, and the Pino Palladino Signature Precision Bass is the other artist P Bass worth a look. Finishes are Olympic White, Aged Charcoal Frost and Faded 3-Color Sunburst.

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
