Our take

Who this one is for

James Burton's was the first signature Telecaster, and he earned it with Ricky Nelson in the late '50s and early '60s before playing behind Elvis Presley, Emmylou Harris and Elvis Costello. His current model looks nothing like a plain Tele: a basswood body under paisley flames, gold-plated hardware and no pickguard.

Three specially designed James Burton pickups run through a five-way "Strat-o-Tele" switch, so you get bridge alone, bridge and middle, bridge and neck in the classic Tele pairing, middle and neck, and neck alone. An S-1 switch sits alongside the controls. The bridge is a six-saddle strings-through hardtail, which lets you set intonation string by string.

The neck is a '60s "U", a fuller carve that fills the hand, on a 9.5" radius maple board with vintage-style frets, and it comes strung with .009s. Choose Blue Paisley Flames or Red Paisley Flames. For another country player's signature Tele, look at the Brent Mason Telecaster.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Want an estimate for this model before you order? Ask us in the chat.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
