Our take

Who this one is for

Michael Landau is one of the most recorded session players of the last four decades, and the guitar on most of those dates has been "Coma", a 1959 Stratocaster he found already modified in an L.A. shop at 16. It has worn many pickups and bridges over the years, and this Stories collection model recreates it as it is today.

The '59 alder body wears a satin nitrocellulose lacquer in Coma Red, and it keeps the Floyd Rose route from one of Coma's earlier lives. Pickups are custom ML Ultra Noiseless single-coils at neck and middle with a custom ML CuNiFe Wide-Range humbucker at the bridge, the second tone knob dedicated to the bridge.

The custom C neck has a slab rosewood board on a 7.25" radius with narrow tall frets. The vintage-style synchronized tremolo has bent steel saddles, the tuners are ClassicGear, and the 4-bolt neck plate carries Coma artwork and a serial number. It comes in a navy blue case with brown ends and a Coma-embroidered gold interior, with a sticker set and strap.

Made in the USA, right-handed. The same Stories collection includes the Eric Johnson 1954 Virginia Stratocaster and the Mike Campbell Red Dog Telecaster.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Want an estimate for this model before you order? Ask us in the chat.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
