Our take

Who this one is for

Troy Sanders has anchored Mastodon for more than 20 years, and his Precision Bass is built for a band with drop-tuned guitars: alder in Silverburst with a matching headstock, a custom split-coil P and single-coil J pickup pair, and an 18-volt active preamp.

The controls are master volume, a pan pot to blend the two pickups, treble and bass boost and cut, and a mini toggle to switch the preamp off and run passive. The neck has a custom '70s Precision Bass carve, a 9.5" slab rosewood fingerboard and 20 medium jumbo frets, with pearloid block inlays and a Mastodon "Emperor of Sand" inlay at the 12th fret. The HiMass bridge loads through the body or from the top, and the neck plate carries the "Remission" logo.

For a passive P with a different heavy-rock pedigree, the Nate Mendel P Bass or the Duff McKagan Deluxe Precision Bass are worth a look. The Troy Sanders comes with a deluxe gig bag.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Want an estimate for this model before you order? Ask us in the chat.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
