Our take

Who this one is for

The Butterslax is Bill Kelliher's signature head, built with Dave Friedman for the Mastodon guitarist's mix of metal, rock, prog, thrash, punk and psychedelia. It is a hand-wired, 100-watt, three-channel amp running four EL-34s and four 12AX7s, and Friedman is plain about who it is for: this is a gain amp, and players after a clean platform should look elsewhere in the line.

Channel one covers light overdrive up to hard rock. Channel two, by Friedman's account, starts where most metal amps leave off, and channel three goes further again. Each channel has its own Gain and Master, channel one has its own Bass, Middle and Treble, and channels two and three share an EQ. Global Presence and Thump controls shape the top and bottom, and Friedman describes the result as very tight with a deep low end, detailed mids and clear highs. A line out with level control, the ultra-transparent series loop and a 4, 8 and 16 ohm selector cover the back panel, and a two-button footswitch with LEDs comes in the box.

The BE-100 Deluxe is the closest neighbour: also 100 watts on four EL-34s with three channels, but with a Plexi channel and a wider set of voicing switches. The Butterslax trades that range for three stages of gain and a simpler panel. It comes in black Tolex with checkered grille cloth over a Baltic Birch cabinet.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
