The D-17 is the mahogany-top dreadnought in Martin's Standard Series: solid mahogany top, back and sides in satin Dark Mahogany, with Golden Era scalloped braces in the Forward-Shifted X Brace pattern. The neck is the Golden Era (GE) Modified Low Oval with the High-Performance Taper and a 1 3/4" nut, on an ebony board with Golden Era diamonds and squares short inlays in abalone. Bone pins, a bone nut and a compensated bone saddle finish it off.
Martin describes a warm voice with plenty of dynamic range. It suits a player who likes the all-mahogany D-15M and wants the scalloped bracing, the ebony and the wider nut. For a spruce top over mahogany with the same neck and bracing, look at the D-18.
