Our take

Who this one is for

The D-28 is Martin's spruce-and-rosewood dreadnought: a spruce top over East Indian rosewood back and sides, Golden Era scalloped braces in the Forward-Shifted X Brace pattern, and the Golden Era (GE) Modified Low Oval neck with the High-Performance Taper and a 1 3/4" nut. Antique white binding, a Style 28 rosette and back strip, Style 28 mother of pearl inlays on ebony, a diamond on the headstock and bone pins with faux tortoise dots fill in the Style 28 dress. Martin describes a big dreadnought sound with rich overtones and good balance.

It comes in three gloss tops. Gloss uses the Aging Toner top, Gloss 1933 Ambertone gives the top an amber colour, and Gloss 1935 Sunburst shades it and adds Martin's Custom Ink detail. We like the Gloss 1935 Sunburst here, with the shaded top set against the antique white binding.

The D-28 also comes in satin. For mahogany on this body, see the D-18. For VTS-aged Adirondack and Guatemalan rosewood in a hide-glue build, look at the D-28 Authentic 1937, and for European Red Spruce w/ VTS and gold hardware, the D-28 Modern Deluxe.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
