Our take

Who this one is for

The D-35 is Martin's rosewood Dreadnought with a three-piece back and its own bracing recipe. The spruce top is braced with 1/4" Golden Era non-scalloped braces in the Forward-Shifted X Brace pattern, lighter than the 5/16" scalloped braces in the D-28, and Martin credits that build with a clear, balanced response. The East Indian rosewood back and sides carry a Style 35 back strip, and the neck is the Golden Era (GE) Modified Low Oval with the High-Performance Taper on a 1 3/4" ebony board, finished in satin.

Strummers and flatpickers who like a rosewood Dreadnought with an even spread from bass to treble tend to land here. For the same woods with scalloped bracing, look at the D-28 or the HD-35.

There are three tops. The Gloss leaves the spruce under an Aging Toner, the Gloss 1933 Ambertone tints it a deeper amber, and the Gloss 1935 Sunburst shades the edges dark. We would pick the Ambertone, which gives the top an older colour and leaves the grain in plain view.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
