Our take

Who this one is for

The D-42 Modern Deluxe puts the D-42's abalone trim on Martin's Modern Deluxe construction. The top is European Red Spruce with VTS, braced in Adirondack spruce, also VTS, in a GE-scalloped Forward Shifted X Brace pattern, and Martin fits a carbon fibre bridgeplate under it. The back and sides are East Indian rosewood.

The neck is the Vintage Deluxe, an asymmetrical shape, with the High Performance Taper and a 1 3/4" nut on an ebony board. The fittings move away from the standard D-42: European flamed maple binding, heelcap and endpiece, Golden Era Style 45 snowflake inlays in abalone and mother of pearl, abalone side dots, an ebony headplate with a torch inlay, Liquidmetal bridge pins and Waverly gold open-gear tuners.

For the same woods and inlay style on the Golden Era neck and a spruce top under Aging Toner, look at the D-42. The D-28 Modern Deluxe is this build with Style 28 appointments, and the D-45 Modern Deluxe takes it to Style 45.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
