The 552ce is a 12-string on Taylor's compact Grand Concert body with a neck that joins at the 12th fret, solid red ironbark back and sides and a torrefied spruce top. The 12-fret joint moves the bridge, and Taylor credits it with extra midrange punch and a more relaxed feel under the hand. The 24-7/8" scale helps too, since a shorter scale is easier to fret, which counts for a lot with twelve strings.
Taylor likens red ironbark to Indian rosewood with more power and clarity. The small body answers a light touch, so there's a wide range between soft fingerpicking and a full strum. V-Class bracing and Expression System 2 complete it, with sapele binding, an ebony-bound fretboard and a tortoise pickguard.
For a 12-string on the 25-1/2" scale in a Grand Auditorium body of solid Indian rosewood, look at the Next Generation 454ce.
