Our take

Who this one is for

The Builder's Edition 514ce sets a solid Sitka spruce top on back and sides of Shamel ash, a wood Taylor sources through its urban wood program. Taylor hears a dry, woody midrange from it, with a strong fundamental and restrained overtones, and the scalloped V-Class bracing adds low end, open-string resonance and projection.

The Builder's Edition comfort package is all here, with chamfered edges, a bevelled armrest and a cutaway bevelled to match. The Action Control Neck lets you set the feel you want, and Claria electronics take care of the amplified side. Gotoh 510 tuners in antique chrome, Compass inlays and a firestripe pickguard dress it, with gloss on the body and satin on the neck.

It comes in Natural or Tobacco Kona Burst. The Natural is the one we'd point to if the ash grain is what drew you in, since it leaves both woods in full view. For the same ash back under a mahogany top, see the Builder's Edition 524ce. The Next Generation 514ce is the cedar-top 500 Series model, with mahogany back and sides.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
