The 003 is the 12-fret 00 in Collings' 3 style: East Indian rosewood with a Sitka spruce top, ivoroid binding on the body, fingerboard and slotted peghead, and an abalone rosette. The ebony board carries no inlay, the bridge pins have abalone dots, the tuners are gold Waverlys and a chevron backstrip runs down the back.
Collings puts the 00 close to a classical guitar in size, at 14 1/4" wide, and traces the shape to around the Civil War. The 24 7/8" scale lowers string tension, the 1 13/16" nut gives fingerpicking room, and with the neck joining at the 12th fret the pyramid bridge sits nearer the centre of the lower bout. Collings describes the voice as balanced and precise.
