The SJ is Collings' small jumbo, built here in European maple for the back, sides and neck under a Sitka spruce top. The lower bout is 16" and the body runs 4 1/2" deep, close to dreadnought size, but the waist pulls in tight. Collings says that shape, in maple most of all, brings out more midrange than a dreadnought, with plenty of bass and treble clarity alongside.
It wears ivoroid binding with b/w/b/w/b purfling on the body, ivoroid binding on the board and the haircut peghead, mother-of-pearl Modern Diamonds in ebony and a maple mosaic backstrip. The neck is a C-shape with a 1 11/16" bone nut, the bracing is pre-war scalloped X, and it is strung with mediums.
The same body comes in East Indian rosewood as the SJ Indian and in mahogany as the SJ Mh, and for a 16" slope-shoulder jumbo, look at the CJ. The SJ can be built up with Collings' options in tops, finishes, trim, inlays and more, listed below.
