Our take

Who this one is for

The 290 DC is the double-cutaway take on Collings' 290: a Honduran mahogany body and neck with two hand-wound Lollar P90s, and both horns cut back to open up the upper frets. Collings says it covers clean tones with plenty of harmonic detail through to hard-hitting classic rock.

The double-cutaway neck joint moves the neck pickup closer to the bridge than on the single-cut 290, and Collings says that gives the neck position less bass and more clarity. The hardware is a Kluson ABR-1 with a stop tailpiece, on a 24 7/8" scale and a 12" radius rosewood board with ivoroid long dots, wired 50s style through CTS pots and Jupiter Vintage Yellow caps. The neck sets in with an extra long mortise and tenon, and the finish is high gloss nitrocellulose lacquer.

For the fuller neck voice of the single cutaway, look at the 290. Collings also offers the DC with a MojoAxe CWT or Schaller Signum wraparound tailpiece, and the rest of Collings' options are listed below.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
