The CW Indian A is the Collings Winfield in East Indian rosewood, named for the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. Collings built it as a modified dreadnought around what flatpickers ask for most: an Adirondack spruce top and Adirondack bracing, an enlarged soundhole, and a pre-war scalloped X-brace with no tongue brace, a pattern based on the first 14-fret dreadnoughts. Collings designed it for headroom and projection under hard picking.
It's easy to pick out on sight, with a Dalmatian pickguard and an ebony fingerboard left without inlays. Trim is ivoroid binding with herringbone purfling, an ivoroid-bound board, a zipper backstrip and a square peghead with a volute. The Modified V neck carries a 1 23/32" bone nut, with 2 1/4" spacing at the belly bridge.
