Our take

Who this one is for

The D1 T is the Traditional Series version of Collings' mahogany dreadnought, a Sitka spruce top over Honduran mahogany built with pre-war guitars in mind. Collings adjusts the bracing and tonewoods for weight and thickness, and describes the voice as rounded and warm up top with a present low midrange, keeping a quick attack and strong projection.

Trim on the T is tortoise binding with custom wood purflings, a custom wood rosette, gold mother-of-pearl long dots and a gold mother-of-pearl logo. Body finish is ultra-thin nitrocellulose. The Traditional neck profile sits on a 1 3/4" bone nut with 2 5/16" spacing at the belly bridge, which gives the picking hand more room than the standard D1.

For the standard mahogany dreadnought, look at the D1, for the Traditional Series in East Indian rosewood, the D2H T, and for the Hill Country build with an Adirondack top, the D1 A HC. Collings' options for tops, finishes and trim are listed below.

The photo shows one example build.

Options for this model include:

  • Adirondack, old-growth Sitka, European, Engelmann or torrefied spruce top
  • Figured mahogany, cocobolo or figured maple back and sides
  • Sunburst or Western shaded top, full-body sunburst, Doghair or Jet Black finish
  • Adirondack bracing
  • Abalone rosette or abalone top border
  • Wood binding
  • Peghead inlays (Torch, Flowerpot, Vine, Flourish, Rose)
  • Fingerboard inlays (snowflakes, Tree of Life and others)
  • Nut width and neck options
  • Left-handed build

Price subject to change based on options chosen.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
