The D3 is Collings' square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought in East Indian rosewood under a Sitka spruce top, in the line's dressier trim. Collings' goal for its dreadnoughts is clarity on top of the depth and warmth of a large body, and it points to their bass behind a singer and to flatpickers who play them alongside banjo and fiddle.
The D3 trim is an abalone rosette, ivoroid body binding with five-ply black and white purfling, and ivoroid binding on both the fingerboard and the square, volute-backed peghead. The ebony board is left without inlays, the bridge pins carry abalone dots, the tuners are gold Waverly and the backstrip is chevron. The Modified V neck has a 1 11/16" bone nut on a 25 1/2" scale.
