The DS2H is Collings' 12-fret slope shoulder dreadnought in East Indian rosewood with a Sitka spruce top, pre-war scalloped X-bracing and herringbone purfling inside ivoroid binding. Collings traces the shape to the original 12-fret dreadnought, first drawn up as an oversized Hawaiian guitar nearly a century ago, and keeps the slotted headstock and wide neck that came with it. The ebony board carries abalone long diamonds and squares.
That neck is 1 13/16" at the bone nut with a modified V profile, which leaves room for fingerpicking, and the 12-fret joint puts the bridge nearer the centre of the lower bout. Collings credits that placement with an open, airy sound and more warmth than its 14-fret dreadnoughts.
For bound board and peghead with an abalone rosette, step up to the DS3. The 14-fret version of this trim is the D2H, and the Hill Country take on the same body is the DS2 A HC. Collings' options for tops, finishes, trim and inlays are listed below.
