Our take

Who this one is for

The Esquire is the one-pickup Telecaster, and this 1956 version keeps it that simple: a 2-piece select ash body, a 1-piece quartersawn maple neck, and a single Custom Shop Hand-Wound '55-'56 Single-Coil Tele in the bridge. The body wears a Relic finish while the hardware gets the lighter Closet Classic treatment, so the metal parts look less worn than the body.

The three-way switch is the Esquire's party trick. Position 1 sends the pickup straight to the jack with no volume or tone in the circuit, position 2 adds the volume control, and position 3 brings in the tone control as well. The neck is an 11/56 Off Center "V", and the 7.25" to 9.5" compound radius feels round near the nut and flattens out higher up for bends. Brass saddles sit on a strings-through-body bridge.

For two pickups on the same early recipe, look at the 1954 Telecaster or the 1955 Telecaster Journeyman Relic with Closet Classic Hardware. The Vintage Custom '59 Esquire is the same idea a few years on, with no aging.

Three finishes: Super Faded Burgundy Mist Metallic, Super Aged Charcoal Frost Metallic and Aged '55 Desert Tan, all with a maple neck.

The photos show one example. Wood grain and aging vary from guitar to guitar, so the one built for you will differ in the details.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Want an estimate for this model before you order? Ask us in the chat.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
