Our take

Who this one is for

For a short spell around 1958 the Telecaster loaded its strings through the back of the bridge plate instead of through the body, and that top-load bridge is the point of this model. It changes the angle the strings take over the saddles. The 3-saddle bridge uses threaded steel barrel saddles.

The body is 2-piece select ash with a 1-ply Eggshell pickguard, and the 1-piece quartersawn maple neck has a 1957 Soft "V" back and a 9.5" radius with narrow tall frets. Two Custom Shop Hand-Wound '58 Single-Coil Tele pickups are wired the old way: bridge pickup with tone, neck pickup with tone, and a third position with the neck pickup on a fixed, darker tone setting. Journeyman Relic aging sits in the middle of the scale, worn but not beaten.

The Vintage Custom 1958 Top-Load Telecaster is the same idea with an as-new finish. The 1959 Telecaster Journeyman Relic moves on a year, with a bridge that takes either stringing and a modern three-way.

Three finishes: Firemist Red, Faded Surf Green and Super Aged Dirty White Blonde.

The photos show one example. Wood grain and aging vary from guitar to guitar, so the one built for you will differ in the details.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Want an estimate for this model before you order? Ask us in the chat.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
