Our take

Who this one is for

Robert Cray's Stratocaster is built the way he plays his own: as a hardtail. The six-saddle strings-through-body bridge has no tremolo, so the strings anchor straight through the select alder body with no springs or trem cavity involved. Gold hardware, a three-ply white pickguard and his signature on the headstock finish it off.

The neck is a 1961 "C" in gloss urethane over a 12" radius rosewood board with 21 vintage-style frets. That flatter radius lets you bend further before a note chokes than a vintage 7.25" board would, and the "C" carve fills the hand without feeling clubby. Three custom vintage-style single-coils keep the voice in classic Strat territory, with tone controls on the neck and middle pickups.

For a fixed bridge from an earlier era, the Vintage Custom '55 Hardtail Strat, the Vintage Custom '59 Hardtail Strat and the 1956 Hardtail Stratocaster Heavy Relic take the same idea back to the 1950s. The Cray comes in Violet or Inca Silver, both with rosewood boards.

The photos show one example. Wood grain and aging vary from guitar to guitar, so the one built for you will differ in the details.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Want an estimate for this model before you order? Ask us in the chat.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
