Our take

Who this one is for

The pine-body Esquire of 1950 was the first solid-body electric of the line that became the Telecaster, built for less than a year before the body changed to ash. This recreation keeps the details: a two-piece sandwich style pine body about 1.5" thick, slightly thinner than later guitars, and a one-piece rift sawn maple neck with no truss rod, as on the originals.

A single Custom Shop Hand-Wound '50-'51 Blackguard Single-Coil Tele pickup sits in the bridge, on full Esquire wiring: position 1 sends the pickup straight to the output jack, position 2 adds the volume control, and position 3 adds volume and tone. The neck has a 1950 Esquire "U" carve and a 7.25" to 9.5" compound radius. With no truss rod, the neck relief can't be adjusted the usual way, so the guitar is happiest in a stable climate.

The finish is NOS flash coat lacquer with only slight aging to the metal parts. The Vintage Custom 1950 Pine Esquire Time Capsule Package is the same guitar in Aged White Blonde or Wide-Fade 2-Color Sunburst.

It comes in Aged Black with a maple fingerboard.

The photos show one example. Wood grain and aging vary from guitar to guitar, so the one built for you will differ in the details.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. After you order, we check with the supplier and email you an ETA. If it changes, we let you know, and you can cancel.

Want an estimate for this model before you order? Ask us in the chat.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses Ian Vance's bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
