The Dirty Shirley pedal takes the control set of Friedman's Dirty Shirley amp, a single-channel head, and puts it in an overdrive pedal: Volume, Gain, Bass, Mid, Treble and Presence, plus a Tight switch on the side. It covers a lot with the gain knob alone. Low settings with the volume up give you a dirty boost to push an amp that's already breaking up. Further up it is a thick classic rock drive into a clean amp. The Tight switch cuts loose low end from the pedal, or from an amp or another drive it's pushing.
Friedman makes three amp-based drives here, each named for its amp. The Dirty Shirley is the one with a Tight switch and a Mid knob. The Smallbox pedal swaps the Tight switch for a gain structure switch that drops it into its amp's Plexi channel. The BE-OD is the BE-100 voice, with Tight on a knob and no Mid. If you play the Dirty Shirley head or combo, this is that amp on a pedalboard.
