The Runt-50 Combo puts Friedman's two-channel, 50-watt Runt circuit over a 16 ohm, 12" Celestion G12H Redback. Power comes from two EL-34s, with four 12AX7s in the preamp. The clean channel has volume, bass, treble and a three-position bright switch, and covers clean through a slightly broken-up blues or country tone. The overdrive channel, with its Boost switch and Gain knob, runs from classic rock into metal, and Friedman says it cleans up with the guitar's volume knob even when the gain is up.
The cab-simulated XLR output (ground lift, level, center/edge speaker switch) sends a direct signal to the desk or the studio while the speaker keeps working on stage. The series effects loop is buffered, and the front end was built to take boosts, overdrives, phasers, flangers, tremolos and wahs.
The Runt-50 Head is the same amp without the speaker, and 20.5 pounds lighter at 31 lbs. The Runt-20 Combo is the smaller sibling: EL-84s, a G12M Creamback, a simpler clean channel, and an internal load that lets it run silently through the XLR with no speaker connected.
