The VX-30 2x12 Combo is the VX-30 circuit and two Celestion Alnico Blue speakers in one cabinet. That's 30 watts from four EL84s, three ECC83S preamp tubes, a 5AR4 tube rectifier, cathode bias and no negative feedback, handcrafted in Los Angeles on custom-made transformers. Dave Friedman based the circuit on a 1963 copper-panel British amp with a Top Boost circuit, and the Alnico Blues are the speaker those early amps were built around.
It has two channels. The Brilliant channel carries Volume, Treble and Bass; the Normal channel carries Volume and a three-position Voice switch, Treble, Normal or Bass. Both run in phase, so you can blend them, which the originals couldn't do. The Cut control trims the power amp's top end, and the Master Volume lets the EL84s break up at a level that works in a smaller room. There's no standby switch: the tube rectifier brings the amp up slowly by itself.
The combo is the same size as the VX-212 cab and weighs 69 lbs, against 82 for the VX-30 Head and VX-212 stacked, so it's the easier one to move. The extra speaker outputs, one 16 ohm plus paired outputs for an 8 ohm cab or two 16 ohm cabs, mean you can still add a cab later. Pick the head instead if you want to run the VX-30 into a cabinet you already have. It comes in Black or Ivory.
