Gibson first made the Burstbucker in the early 1990s to recapture the uneven winding of the original Kalamazoo P.A.F.s, which came off imprecise machines with output and tone varying from one pickup to the next. The new 50s Burstbucker is wound with plain enamel wire on asymmetrical coils over an Alnico 2 magnet, for a sweet, vintage-style tone: airy and full clean, with slightly lifted highs when it's driven.
It's wax potted against microphonic feedback, so it stays free of squeal at stage volume and with gain, and it has a braided two-conductor lead. Gibson sells it singly and pairs it with the 50s Burstbucker Underwound: this one in the treble position, the Underwound in the rhythm.
