The 001 is Collings' 00 in its original 12-fret form, with Honduran mahogany back and sides under Sitka spruce. Collings traces the shape back to around the Civil War and puts its size close to a classical guitar: 14 1/4" wide, with a slotted peghead and a small pyramid bridge.
The 24 7/8" scale lowers string tension, the 1 13/16" bone nut gives the fingers room, and with the 12-fret joint the bridge sits nearer the centre of the lower bout. Collings describes the voice as balanced and precise, and has seen the 00 used for everything from backing a singer to ragtime. The trim is tortoise binding with b/w/b/w top purfling, a walnut backstrip, pearl short dots and nickel Waverly tuners.
