The D1 is Collings' square-shouldered 14-fret dreadnought in Honduran mahogany with a Sitka spruce top, built in Austin. Collings aims to bring clarity to the depth and warmth of a big dreadnought body. It points to the bass response as a strength behind a singer, and notes that flatpickers use its dreadnoughts to hold their own beside banjo and fiddle.
Trim is tortoise binding with black and white top purfling, a walnut backstrip, and an unbound ebony fingerboard with mother-of-pearl long dots. The Modified V neck has a 1 11/16" bone nut on a 25 1/2" scale and a 14" to 26" compound radius, under a pre-war scalloped X-brace.
Inside this run, the D1 T is the Traditional Series version, the D1 A HC is the Hill Country build with an Adirondack top, and the D2H is the same body in East Indian rosewood with herringbone. Collings can build the D1 up with other tops, finishes, necks and trim, and those options follow below.
