The IR-D is a Friedman tube preamp and DI with two identical channels, both based on the Dirty Shirley and Twin Sister. Friedman describes that circuit as Dave's modded JTM45, and it is the British, lower-gain side of the Friedman sound. Two 12AX7s run at high voltage inside a box about six and a half inches wide, followed by power amp simulation and an impulse response cab, out through a balanced TRS jack or headphones.
Because the channels match, you can set one for rhythm and one for lead, or two different amounts of the same sound. Each has its own boost, a 2-way Bright switch and a 3-way Structure switch, so three footswitches cover four sounds. Run it as a full rig to the desk, as a preamp into a power amp and a real cab, or as an IR loader through the loop return. Thirteen Friedman IRs come with the editor, including the Dirty Shirley 1x12, and you can load your own and save to 128 MIDI presets.
The box and connections are the same as the IR-X. The difference is voicing: the IR-X splits clean-to-crunch and high gain across its channels, while the IR-D stays in the Dirty Shirley range on both. If the Dirty Shirley head or combo is the sound you want on a pedalboard, this is that one.
