Our take

Who this one is for

The IR-X is a two-channel Friedman tube preamp in a pedalboard box about six and a half inches wide. Two 12AX7s run at high voltage, so the gain and touch response come from real tubes, and the output goes through power amp simulation and an impulse response cab before it leaves on a balanced TRS jack or the headphone out. Channel 1 runs from a British-voiced clean up to a Plexi-style crunch, with a 3-way Bright switch. Channel 2 is Friedman's higher-gain voice, with a 2-way Tight switch. Each channel has its own boost, so three footswitches get you four sounds.

It works three ways. Use it as the whole rig, with drives in front and time-based effects in the loop, straight to the desk or into headphones. Feed the loop send into a power amp and keep a real cab on stage while the IR output still goes to front of house. Or skip the preamp and use the loop return as an IR loader. Twelve Friedman IRs come with the editor, three of them on the hardware switches, and you can load your own and save everything to 128 MIDI presets.

The IR-X is the one for players who want the classic Friedman two-channel spread, clean-to-crunch and high gain. The IR-D trades that for two identical channels based on the Dirty Shirley and Twin Sister. The IR-J is the Jake E. Lee signature, with TS-style boosts and an extra Low-Pass Filter control.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
