The IR-J is Jake E. Lee's signature version of Friedman's tube preamp and DI. Two 12AX7s run at over 300 volts behind two independent footswitchable channels based on the JEL-100 and JEL-20 heads, and impulse-response cab and power amp simulation sits after them, all in a box 6.5 inches wide.
Channel 1 goes from bluesy British cleans to a Plexi-style roar. Channel 2 is the higher-gain JEL voice, and its two-position gain switch drops it to the classic 800-style circuit. Each channel has its own TS-style boost with Tone and Volume, so three footswitches get you four sounds. It ships with 18 Friedman IRs, some of them new ones from OwnHammer, picked per channel with a three-way switch or swapped for your own in the Friedman 4.3 Editor. The editor also sets Thump, Presence and Low-Pass Filter per channel and stores 128 MIDI presets.
Run it as a whole rig into a desk or headphones, as a preamp into a power amp and cab through the loop send, or as an IR loader alone through the loop return. The IR-X has a clean-to-gritty channel and a high-gain channel, and the IR-D has two identical Dirty Shirley/Twin Sister channels. The IR-J is the JEL-voiced one, and its per-channel TS boosts are a first in Friedman's IR line.
