Our take

Who this one is for

The Custom 24 is the original PRS, the first model Paul Reed Smith brought to the public at the company's first Winter NAMM show in 1985. It's a figured maple top carved over a mahogany back, a one-piece mahogany neck in the Pattern Thin shape, 24 frets on a 25" scale, Birds on rosewood and a pair of DMO pickups.

The Pattern Thin neck runs 53/64" deep at the first fret and 57/64" at the twelfth, on a 10" radius that sits between a round vintage board and a flat modern one. PRS voices the DMOs to stay clear across the whole range, and the 5-way blade gets a spread of sounds from two pickups. The Gen III tremolo and Phase III Locking Tuners are PRS's answer to keeping a vibrato guitar in tune.

If you want one PRS to cover the most ground, start here. Next to it, the Custom 24-08 trades the DMOs for TCI pickups with EQ mini-toggles, and the Custom 24 "Floyd" moves to a double-locking Floyd Rose. Our pick is Faded Whale Blue, a soft blue that lets the figure in the maple carry the guitar.

The Top option sets the grade of that maple. Standard is PRS's figured maple top, and the 10 Top is a higher grade of figure, paired with hybrid hardware.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
