Our take

Who this one is for

The Swamp Ash Special is the hum, "single", hum guitar in PRS's Bolt-On line. Two 58/15 LT humbuckers flank a PRS Narrowfield in the middle, mounted on a swamp ash body with a bolt-on maple neck, 22 frets and a 25" scale.

The controls are the reason to look closely. A 5-way blade and two mini-toggle coil taps give twelve pickup combinations, and PRS voiced it so the volume holds level between the humbucking and single-coil settings, which matters when you change sounds mid-song. The Narrowfield brings single-coil bite to the middle position without the hum. The Pattern Regular neck has a 10" radius and a satin nitro back, with a PRS Patented Tremolo and Phase III locking tuners.

We'd put this in the hands of a player who wants humbucker and single-coil sounds on one guitar with a vibrato. If two pickups are enough, compare it with the CE 24 and its 85/15s, or the NF 53 for a Narrowfield pair on a 25.5" scale. Our pick is McCarty Tobacco Sunburst, because a tobacco burst over swamp ash is a look we never tire of.

The Fingerboard option is rosewood or maple. Everything else, Birds and the 10" radius included, stays the same, so it comes down to the look and feel you prefer.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
