Our take

Who this one is for

The McCarty carries the name of Ted McCarty, who Paul Reed Smith brought in as a consultant in the late 1980s and who became his mentor and friend. PRS released the first McCarty in 1994. Today's guitar is a 22-fret, 25" scale solidbody with a violin-carved maple top over a mahogany back and a bound rosewood fretboard, in high-gloss nitro.

The neck is PRS's Pattern shape, 7/8" deep at the first fret and 1 11/16" across the nut, so there's real shoulder in the hand. A PRS Stoptail with brass inserts and Phase III non-locking tuners with brass shafts keep the hardware fixed, with no vibrato. Two McCarty III humbuckers, which PRS voices as vintage-inspired, run through one volume, a push/pull tone and a 3-way toggle.

This is the McCarty for someone who likes a 25" scale and a single volume and tone. Set it beside the PRS McCarty 594, which moves to a 24.594" scale, a Pattern Vintage neck, a two-piece bridge and two volumes with two tones. Our pick is McCarty Tobacco Sunburst. On the guitar named for Ted McCarty, the finish that shares his name feels right.

The Top option picks the maple: Standard is PRS's figured maple top, and the 10 Top is a higher grade of figure, which PRS lists with hybrid hardware.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
