Our take

Who this one is for

The NF 53 takes its cue from one of Paul Reed Smith's own vintage guitars from 1953. It's a flat-top swamp ash body with a bolt-on maple neck, a maple fretboard and a 25.5" scale, carrying two Narrowfield DD pickups through a volume, a tone and a 3-way blade.

The Narrowfield DD (Deep Dish) is built with taller bobbins for more windings and extra steel between the magnets, and the point PRS makes about it is single-coil sounds without the hum. The Pattern 53 neck is 7/8" deep at the first fret, with PRS Medium frets and a 10" radius. A steel plate-style bridge with brass saddles, a bone nut and Phase III non-locking tuners finish it off.

If you already play a two-pickup, plate-bridge guitar and the hum has always bothered you, this is the PRS to try. The Myles Kennedy also pairs Narrowfields with a steel plate bridge but adds a 5-way switch, so it's the closest comparison in the line. The NF 53 Satin is this guitar in satin nitro with its own colours. Our pick is Orange Tabby, a name that made the whole shop smile and a colour that suits the outline.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
