Our take

Who this one is for

The S2 Vela was PRS's first offset body shape, and it stands apart in the S2 series. It pairs a mahogany body and set mahogany neck with a PRS DS-01 humbucker in the treble position, a PRS Narrowfield in the bass position, and a plate-style bridge with two brass saddles. The neck is a 22-fret Pattern Regular on a 25" scale.

Pull up the tone knob and the DS-01 splits to a single coil, so the 3-way toggle covers both humbucking and single-coil sounds from the treble pickup. The two saddles on the plate-style bridge are compensated for intonation, which means two saddles cover six strings and still play in tune up the neck. PRS describes the pickup pairing as bright and punchy, with full mids and a chimey top end.

The Vela suits players drawn to offsets who want a 22-fret mahogany neck with some depth. Compare it with the S2 Vela HHT, which moves to two DS-01 humbuckers and a PRS Patented Tremolo, and the S2 Vela Semi-Hollow, which adds a chambered body and an f-hole. The S2 Vela Satin is this guitar in a low-sheen finish.

Our pick is Antique White. It suits the offset outline and the vintage-leaning bridge, and it lets the shape do the talking.

Questions we get

How much do I pay today?

Your choice: the full price, or a 25% deposit. On a deposit, the balance is due when the guitar reaches the shop, before it ships to you. A deposit is paid by card or PayPal. Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay can't take one.

When will it arrive?

It varies by product, anywhere from two weeks up to several months. If you'd like a date for this model first, ask us in the chat and we'll check with the supplier before you order. If you're ready now, go ahead: we confirm the ETA by email once your order is in, and if it changes, we let you know and you can cancel.

Can I cancel?

Yes, any time before the supplier invoices it and ships it to us. We refund what you paid less 3% to cover the card processing fee.

Once it has shipped to us it is a special order and final sale. If it arrives with something wrong, we put that right.

What if the price goes up before it arrives?

You pay the price you ordered at. Once your order is placed we hold that price, even if the supplier raises it before the guitar arrives.

Is the free setup included?

Yes. A pre-order is an online order, so it gets the same free setup: it crosses our bench before it ships, set up the way you choose. The setup menu above shows what that covers.

Do I pay duty or brokerage on a US order?

No. Duty, taxes, brokerage and customs on a US order are handled at our end before the instrument leaves Ottawa. It arrives at your door with nothing to pay.

Orders going anywhere outside Canada and the United States work differently. The shipping and returns policy sets out which is which.

Can I finance it?

Yes, if you are in Canada and paying in full. Pick PayPlan by RBC or Shop Pay Installments as your payment method at checkout. The plan, the rate and the approval sit with the provider, and you see the terms before you agree to anything. You pay a deposit by card or PayPal.
