The Drop Top Classic is the Drop Top with a pickguard. Anderson bends the book-matched top, in quilt maple, koa or walnut, down over the body back to form a forearm contour, and lays a pickguard over it in the traditional S layout. Anderson dates the model to 1991, a year after the Drop Top.
The back is alder or basswood, with a maple neck and rosewood board, on a 25-1/2" scale or the 24-3/4" Shorty. The Shorty has slightly lower string tension. Anderson holds that the pickguard itself moves the sound toward a more traditional S character.
Between the two Drop Tops, the visible difference is the pickguard. For the whole figured top on show, look at the Drop Top. For a pickguard S without the dropped top, look at The Classic.
The guitar in the photo is one customer's build in Natural Red Burst, shown as an example. Every Anderson is built to order: after you order, we go through the build with you, from the woods and finish to the neck shape, frets, pickups and hardware.
